Birthday Coastal Walk For ME

First of all IT’S MY BIRTHDAY!! Today I am celebrating being alive for 47 years ~ I can’t quite figure out where all those years have gone but that’s how old I am according to my birth certificate so it must be true.  I decided to write this blog and share my day with you all, along with my fundraising walk to raise funds for Invest in ME Research. A fantastic charity raising funds and awareness plus working on research projects for folk like me who have the chronic illness Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. It is a condition which comes with many varied symptoms, some constant and others intermittent.

This year instead of our usual canal side walk I have come away to Primrose Valley on my own for a respite week, to be joined by the family at the end of my break as it’s where we have our static caravan aka my happy place. I chose to take the lovely cliff top walk to get to the Filey beach, which we can access from the park. Then rest, paddle, picnic and people watch before returning to my caravan via the lakeside route. Thankfully there are numerous benches all over the park and along the beach path too.

But before all that I had to fuel up so sharing with you my scrummy breakfast ~ well one must keep ones energy up for the walk! Croissants with raspberry jam and the necessary bucket of coffee or three and a big bowl of juicy melon ~ damn the healthy eating for today!

Preparations were next, making the picnic (sarnie, crisps, chilled can or two of Pimms, fruit salad and cupcakes), then the packing  of the blanket, towel and camera. All walks require sustenance at the half~way (beach) pit~stop and alcohol at lunch is a birthday rule, so don’t judge me.

With bag packed, my comfy trainers on my feet and proudly wearing my Invest in ME t~shirt off I was just about to go with my trusty purple stick propping me up…when I received a delivery, which made me sob tears of happiness…

Once I had composed myself and had a chat with Dave on the phone, I set off…

Then, once just the right spot was found it was time to unpack the picnic, bloomin starving work this walking malarkey! The beach was pretty quiet, it was wonderful, the smell of the salty sea air, feel of the sun on my skin, stomach full and serenaded by the gulls. I enjoyed watching the few folks who joined me, most were with their dogs ~ making me pine for the hairy trio! Lunch settled ~ it was time since the legs had rested a bit, to have a paddle.

Then time for return journey, so squeezed swelling feet back into trainers and made off to take the lake route back to the caravan. The walk back was much slower with far more rests, fatigue setting in hard but managed to slowly walk back…

I can’t tell you how relieved I was to see the caravan ahead & as soon as I got in just kicked off my trainers & rested my swollen feet (which looked like balloons with toes as you can see) snug in my little nest before allowing myself to have 40winks or more.

THEN came the birthday dinner courtesy of Tesco ready meals, washed down nicely with chilled Chablis, which was all the more yummy because all I had to do was heat it up.

Finally, to top off a great day, calls with my loved ones, who are joining me in a couple of days, write this blog and then settle down and watch the film “Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” in scented candlelight.

It has been a fabulous day and now I’ve got my feet up, glass of wine in hand ready for my film ~ so I bid you goodnight and thank you for sharing my birthday with me; not 47 but 20 years old with 27 years experience!
