Until Saturday 15th September of this year I was a Santa Pod Virgin. Which is quite something considering my other half has been going for a number of years and drag raced there too!
Much of the reason for leaving it so long before going was the camping aspect. I don’t do camping, glamping at a push but definitely not camping! For various reasons I need easy access to a flushing loo, so toilet blocks or hedgerows aren’t my thing ~ especially as my last emergency loo visit in some bushes resulted in nettle rash all over my bum because I lost my balance as squatting isn’t my forte.
I bloomin’ loved watching banger racing last year and so, because my hubby can’t get enough of my company, he suggested booking a hotel and taking me for the day to Santa Pod to pop my drag racing cherry. We have the Holiday Inn app because the hotels are pretty much brilliant for our needs and I can request ground floor rooms so not stairs or lifts. They are affordable and you know exactly what you are getting, no frills but comfy.
We left at a reasonable time Saturday morning and arrived not long after midday. We were given disabled parking but have to say even that was a fair distance from the racing strip and so very slow meandering with rests were our only option. Knowing this, next time Dave said he would insist on driving me to the strip then turn around to park in the disabled area so I can then just use my crutches. They have fairground rides for the children ~ although they seemed deserted when we arrived but assume they come on later in the evening.
Then you go through the show area of cars parked for the viewing of..
Moving through to where the hardcore camping and racing folk are..
Race cars move slowly, stopping and starting along the road round the viewing area until they are queued up for their race..
You can either go and sit up in the stands or go to the other side and sit on the grassy bank. Dave suggested we go to the stands to watch some of his mates racing ~ a group called the Gasser Circus. So up we went ~ it says very clearly on notices that there is no standing so that no one blocks anyone else’s view. HA! ~ it seems many folk don’t adhere to that rule, despite the commentator saying over the tannoy for them to SIT the fuck DOWN! I have to admit some of these heads were just looking for a seat and I’m less annoyed now but was irritated at the time, despite realising they didn’t intend to get in my way..
So, my first thoughts on drag racing, blimey the view’s good, bloody hell its loud and will my eardrums burst? It’s safe to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching the racing, some cars raced by themselves to see if they could beat their best time. Others raced other cars, some raced against their mates and then some raced against strangers. Here are a few of my racing pics..
I had a seat on the cowpog picnic table bench combo type thing and Dave went to get me a delicious ice~cream chocolate milk shake.
We sat for a while people watching, a hobby we both enjoy, before getting up once more to go back to the car and hotel because I was seriously flagging by now. Whilst sitting resting and whilst walking back to the car I fired off a few snaps of folk just going about their business, trying my hand at “candid” photography..
Dave observed that I need some more practice with subtlety as I seem to get clocked just as I take the picture ~ so either I need to just go with it, smile and brazen it out or learn to be a tad less obvious.
All in all my view on the whole drag racing experience is that it’s bloody good fun, I need earmuffs, to use a scooter or get dropped off in the show area. To take our camping chairs and a picnic to campout on the grassy bank, where I can enjoy the racing, people watching and filling my face. OH and to definitely spend the night in a hotel afterwards ~ so no night~time loo issues!
Finally, here are just a few odds and sods taken during my time at Santa Pod..
I am now looking forward to many more drag racing trips next year and perhaps other racing events such as drifting and banger racing too.
Thank you for your company ~ see you next time.
